Every vendor calls its entry-level exam "foundational"
Search "cloud certification for beginners" and AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud, and CompTIA all show up promising roughly the same thing: a foundational, low-barrier credential that proves you understand the cloud. They are not interchangeable, and picking the wrong one first wastes exam fees and study time on content that does not match the jobs you are applying to.
The 2 questions that actually decide it
Cut through the marketing with 2 questions. First: do you already know which cloud your target employer, or the job postings you are looking at, actually runs on? Second: are you optimizing for depth on one platform, or for a single credential that reads as general cloud literacy? Most learners starting this course do not yet know the answer to the first question, which is exactly why the second half of this lesson explains why AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is the default recommendation when you do not know yet.

What each one actually tests
AWS Cloud Practitioner splits its content into 4 domains: Cloud Concepts (24%), Security and Compliance (30%), Cloud Technology and Services (34%), and Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%). Over a third of the exam is specific AWS service knowledge, and Security and Compliance outweighs Billing by more than double.
Azure Fundamentals splits differently: Describe cloud concepts (25 to 30%), Describe Azure architecture and services (35 to 40%), and Describe Azure management and governance (30 to 35%). Between 65 and 75% of the exam sits on Azure's own architecture, services, and management tooling specifically, a heavier platform-specific lean than AWS's split.
Google Cloud Digital Leader lists 6 content areas instead of 4, and does not publish weightings for them: digital transformation with Google Cloud, data transformation, artificial intelligence, modernizing infrastructure and applications, trust and security, and scaling with Google Cloud operations. The framing leans more toward business outcomes and AI than the other 2, which fits its audience of business and technical stakeholders who need to talk about what Google Cloud enables, not just what it is made of.
None of the 3 tests hands-on configuration skill directly. All 3 are knowledge exams, delivered as multiple-choice or multiple-response questions under proctored conditions.
Boundary: CompTIA Cloud+ is not a peer to these 3
CompTIA Cloud+ (CV0-004) looks like it belongs on the same list: it is vendor-neutral, covering AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud concepts in a single exam, and CompTIA markets it as an intermediate cloud credential. It is not a peer to the 3 above for a first certification. CompTIA recommends 2 to 3 years of hands-on experience in systems administration or cloud engineering before attempting it, the exam mixes multiple-choice questions with performance-based tasks instead of knowledge questions alone, and its passing bar, 750 out of 900, sits on harder content than a true zero-prerequisite exam.
It is tempting to read "vendor-neutral" as "easier, since it doesn't commit me to one platform." The opposite is true here: Cloud+ assumes you already have the infrastructure background the other 3 exams are designed to build from scratch. Cloud+ earns its place later, as a second or third credential once you have real hands-on operations experience and want a single vendor-neutral line that spans all 3 major clouds, not as a starting point.

Why this course points to AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner
Synergy Research Group's Q3 2025 tracking of worldwide cloud infrastructure spending put Amazon at 29%, Microsoft at 20%, and Google at 13%, with the 3 combined accounting for 63% of the market. Amazon's lead over the next 2 competitors combined is wide enough, on both market share and job-posting overlap, that "start here if you don't know yet" reliably points to AWS. That is the reasoning behind this course's own roadmap toward the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner as the natural next step, not a claim that AWS is objectively superior to Azure or Google Cloud for every learner's specific situation.
