Phase 1: what you already have

Finishing this course already covers a large share of the Cloud Practitioner exam content. The service models, core services, shared responsibility model, and reliability patterns from earlier domains map directly onto 3 of the exam's 4 domains: Cloud Concepts, Security and Compliance, and Cloud Technology and Services. By the time you reach this lesson, phase 1 is already done; it is the foundation the rest of the roadmap builds on.

Phase 2: AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials (free, official)

AWS Skill Builder offers Cloud Practitioner Essentials at no cost: a self-paced course of videos, demonstrations, and knowledge checks built specifically to prepare candidates for the CLF-C02 exam. It covers the same 4 domains the real exam scores, in AWS's own framing and terminology, which matters since exam questions are written the way AWS documentation talks, not the way a third-party blog might summarize it.

Phase 3: hands-on practice (build on what you already set up)

The previous topic's free-tier lesson already walked through creating an AWS account, setting a budget alert, and launching a scoped IAM user. Reuse that same account here with exam-relevant labs: launch an EC2 instance and attach an S3 bucket, write an IAM policy scoped to a single task, and open the Billing and Cost Management console to see how AWS actually displays usage and cost. Phase 4: practice exams and closing the gaps

A full-length, timed practice exam, 65 questions in 90 minutes, does 2 things a study guide cannot: it builds the stamina to reason clearly for the full session, and it tells you exactly which of the 4 domains is weakest. The higher-leverage move after a practice exam is not to take another one immediately; it is to go back to the official exam guide, find the specific weak domain, and re-study that material directly before testing again.

Misconception: more practice exams beat targeted review

It is tempting to treat practice exams as the whole preparation strategy: take one, note the score, take another, hope the number goes up. Repetition alone can raise a practice score without fixing the underlying gap, since memorizing a set of practice questions is not the same as understanding the domain those questions are drawn from. A single practice exam that reveals "Security and Compliance is my weakest domain," followed by an hour rereading that domain in the exam guide, closes more real gaps than 3 more practice exams taken back to back.

Phase 5: schedule and take the exam

Book the CLF-C02 exam through Pearson VUE, either at a physical testing center or as an online-proctored session from home, for $100 USD. The exam scores on a scale of 100 to 1,000, with 700 required to pass, and an online-proctored attempt typically shows an unofficial pass or fail result the moment you submit.

Worked example: a realistic 4-week plan

Week 1: complete AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials, alongside a light re-read of this course's service-model and security lessons. Week 2: hands-on labs on the free-tier account, EC2, S3, IAM, and a budget alert, following the previous topic's lesson. Week 3: 2 full-length timed practice exams, with every missed question traced back to its domain in the official exam guide. Week 4: targeted review of the single weakest domain from week 3, then schedule and take the real exam.

That pace assumes roughly 5 to 8 hours a week and no prior AWS experience. Someone coming in with existing IT or cloud background can reasonably compress this to 2 weeks; someone with less time available each week should stretch it to 6 or 8 rather than cut a phase out.

Passing Cloud Practitioner also earns a 50% discount voucher toward your next AWS certification exam, so the path forward is worth planning before the discount lapses. Where you go next depends on the direction you chose in the previous lesson.
